Why does Cub Foods accept expired coupons?

I had the chance to visit with a woman who has worked closely with Cub Foods in the past. She shared with me that the reason Cub can accept expired coupons is because they own their own coupon clearinghouse which allows them to reimburse themselves for coupons. This answers the question as to whether Cub gets reimbursed for the expired coupons or not. This also explains why the cashiers at Cub never check the expiration date to see if it's within the 5 mo. period or not. One more piece of local shopping information to tuck away!

Coupons At Cub

I stopped by Cub Foods in Eden Prairie today and here are the coupons I picked up:

• Save $1 when you buy 1 package of Nabisco Cookies (4.05 oz-26 oz) and 1 gallon of milk. I found this peelie on a box of Nabisco cookies near the entrance to the store where they have all of the weekly specials. Expires 9/30/10 States Do Not Double (DND)
• FREE 2 liter of Mountain Dew when you purchase 1 Doritos (11.05oz-12oz) and a Tombstone Pizza. This tearpad was found in the frozen food section alongside the Tombstone pizzas. Expires 7/25/10
• Save $1 on bottled water (6 pack or larger, excludes flavored waters) when you purchase Two packages of these featured Keebler and/or Sunshine snack crackers: Cheez-It, Club, Toasteds, Town House, Wheatables and FlipSides. This tearpad was found near the crackers. Expires 8/15/10
• Save $1 on any (1) Honey Maid Grahams (14 oz. or larger) plus (1) Kraft Jet-Puffed Marshmallows (10 oz. or larger) AND (1) Hershey Milk Chocolate (6 pack). This tearpad was found near the display of these 3 products. DND
• Save $1on any (2) Popsicle products. I found this tearpad on the outside of the freezer case where the popsicles are located. POPSICLES WILL BE $1/BOX AT RAINBOW NEXT WEEK. GET SOME OF THESE NOW AND YOU WILL GET 2 FREE BOXES WITH EACH COUPON NEXT WEEK AT RAINBOW. I have extra of these so if any of my teacher friends at CR want some, contact me and I'll drop them off for you. Expires 7/31/10
• Snapple Rebate. Tearpad rebate form found next to the Snapple products. This is for a FULL rebate of the purchase price of any Snapple 6 pack (up to $6.99) with receipt dated between 5/1/- 7/7. Snapple at Cub is 2/$10.
• Kingsford Charcoal coupons. A coupon booklet peelie can be found on the charcoal display in the meat department. Save $3 when you purchase any (2) Kingsford or Kingsford Match Light Charcoal (6.7 lb. or larger) Save $1 when you purchase any Kingsford or Kingsford Match Light Charcoal (6.7 lb. or larger). Both expire 7/31/10.
• $5 off a 2 lb. bag of Arctic Shrimp 26-30 count. Click HERE to print this coupon. I was able to use the Arctic Shore $5 shrimp coupon today at the Cub Foods in EP. There isn't a 2lb package with 26-30 pieces in it, but there is a 1 lb package priced at $6.99. The manager was a little suspect about the coupon because there are no numbers under the barcode, but she keyed it in and accepted it. 2 1lb bags of shrimp for $1.99/ea is not bad! She said that someone else had recently been in and used the same coupon. No guarantees on how this one will be accepted, but it is from Cub corporate as the email clearly shows. Also, this coupon can be printed multiple times. It is not regulated like most other coupons are.
  

Of course I get these coupons at Cub Foods but I redeem almost all of them at Rainbow Foods on a Wednesday or Saturday. You can always get a better deal overall at Rainbow because of the double coupon opportunity.

Cub Foods Match-ups 4/4-4/10

Here are Karen's match-ups for Cub Foods for this week. I rarely shop at Cub Foods because they don't double coupons. However, I do keep my eye on their weekly ad for the BOGO meat sale. Well. . . this is my week! Gold 'N Plump chicken breasts are BOGO this week! Remember that you can use 2 coupons on this deal. I always print as many chicken coupons as possible when they are available and then I wait for this sale. I can get 2 packages of chicken breasts, only pay for one and then get $1.50 off to boot! Local Pharmacy Choices

I spent most of my afternoon gathering information on local pharmacies. I learned a few things that I didn't know which is always good. I have compiled a list of what you should know about the local pharmacy choices and included it below. People who regularly fill perscriptions should really think about who will receive their pharmacy dollars. Choose wisely and you might find yourself coming out ahead or at least be aware of what your options are.

There are 10 pharmacies in my local area. They are listed here. Let me know if you think I have left one out. I'd be happy to add it if I have overlooked any.

• Walgreens ~ Soon we will have 3 Walgreen's in our community. Walgreens will not pricematch a competitor's price or accept a competitor's pharmacy giftcard coupon. Occasionally a Catalina coupon will be generated for a giftcard with a transferred prescription but it is rare in my experience. They do not make these coupons available in their weekly circular or on their website. Walgreens prides itself on customer service and being open 24 hours a day. The local Walgreen's do have drive-up service which is convenient. I have been told by other pharmacies that Walgreen's tends to be the highest priced option in our community.
• CVS ~ There is one CVS in our community. CVS will pricematch depending upon the situation. They will not pricematch on the $4 generic items or if they will lose money on the deal. Bring in verification of the competitor's price and CVS will call the pharmacy for further verification. CVS will accept a competitor's pharmacy giftcard coupon and on occasion will have one of their own available either in their ad or online. CVS is not a 24-hour pharmacy but it does have a drive-thru.
• Cub Foods ~ Cub Foods has a pharmacy just inside the front door. They will pricematch a competitor's price if it is a local pharmacy with pricing that can be verified. They will not accept a competitor's pharmacy giftcard coupon. Cub Foods used to offer these coupons in their weekly ads or have offers including a hot meal with a prescription. They haven't done this for about the last 6 months.
• Rainbow Foods ~ Rainbow Foods has a pharmacy inside the grocery store. They will pricematch on a case by case basis depending upon the situation. They will not pricematch if it means they will lose money. This is the exception. Rainbow will not accept competitor's pharmacy giftcard coupons but they often have one of their own in their weekly ad. Look towards the back of the ad in the lower right or left corner. Their coupons range from $10-$25 dollars. Rainbow Foods will either pricematch or allow the use of their own pharmacy coupon, but not both. You will receive a Script Saver for each transaction at the Rainbow pharmacy. Read the requirements on these as they specify how many you need to collect in order to receive a $10 giftcard for groceries.
• Target ~ Target will pricematch a competitor's price if it is within a 5-mile radius of the store. They will call the competing pharmacy for price verification. Target will not accept a competitor's pharmacy giftcard coupon but they often have one of their own in their weekly ad. Generally it is for $10. Right now Target has a $10 pharmacy giftcard coupon on their website. It is good until 1/31 and you can print up to 2 of them per computer. There currently is a coupon in the 1/17 Target ad as well.
• Walmart ~ Walmart will not pricematch. They say it's up to their manager to decide if an item can be pricematched or not. I am not confident that this would fly at the local Walmart. There are several other choices of pharmacies that will be competitive, so you might want to stick with those options. They will not accept a competitor's pharmacy giftcard coupon either.
• Costco ~ You can use the Costco pharmacy even if you are not a member. Just tell the attendant at the door that you are going to the pharmacy. Costco will not pricematch. They will not accept a competitor's pharmacy giftcard coupon either as they only take their own coupons. Costco tends to be the lowest priced pharmacy in the community. You can check a prescription price simply by going to the Costco website, click on pharmacy and find the link for drug prices. This is a great feature! Now, Costco will not take checks from non-members. Your choice for payment is cash, or AMEX. As a non-member you are not allowed to purchase anything in the warehouse other than the prescription.
• Byerlys ~ Byerlys has the Prairie Stone Pharmacy inside the store. This pharmacy does pricematch as long as they don't lose money on the deal. They say their prices are in line with Target pharmacy prices. Prairie Stone will not take competitor's pharmacy giftcard coupons. However, they do have an interesting loyalty program. for every 5 perscriptions filled at Prairie Stone you will receive 10% off your next grocery order. While this isn't great, it's more than some of the others offer.

General Pharmacy Guidelines

Consider some of these things when you need to fill a prescription.

• When filling a prescription it is common for people to call and ask for a quote from the pharmacy. Don't hesitate to do this so that you can gather the necessary information needed to make the best choice. Ask the pharmacy if they will accept a call from a local competitor to verify the price.
• Ask the pharmicist if there happens to be a rebate on the prescription you are filling. With some diabeties medications and other drugs there often are rebates you can take advantage of.
• Watch the local Target, Rainbow Foods, Cub Foods and CVS for pharmacy giftcard coupons.
• Read the fine print on these giftcard coupons. They will specify that they are valid with a "new or transferred prescription" or with just a "transferred" prescription. Some pharmacies pay attention to these guidelines and adhere to them while others will give you a giftcard with any prescription. See what works for you.

Electrasol Tablets $.49 at Cub Foods

This is a product that I LOVE, but I dread buying! I dread buying all of the "essential" non-food items like paper products, toothpaste, shampoo, etc. So. . . when I can stock up for an excellent price, I am a happy camper!

Such is the case this week with Electrasol tablets. These are on sale this week for $2.99 with a coupon from the Cub Coupon Booklet found at the entrance to Cub Foods. This booklet is also available online by clicking HERE. The coupon can be found on page 35. In today's paper there is a coupon for $2.50 off one package of these tablets. So. . . that brings the price to a ridiculous $.49 which is just right for me!

These high value coupons for this product come out every 6-8 weeks or so. When they are in the coupon insert it is a great time to consider buying another paper. Think about it. The paper costs $1.00 and you save $2.50 with this coupon alone. It's a no brainer, right?

Cub Foods Prescription Pricematch

Cub Foods will price match a competitor's prescription price. The competitor's price must be verifible and from a nearby pharmacy. Internet and free offers are excluded. Did you know that you can call pharmacies and get a quote on filling a prescription? If I had prescriptions that I was filling on a regular basis, I would definitely put a spreadsheet together and contact every local pharmacy to get a written quote. I would find out how often their pricing changes and keep a close eye on this. Not only can you pricematch at Cub, but you can use the prescription coupons at Rainbow, CVS and Target to get free giftcards. Be smart with your pharmacy business! Don't give those dollars to just anybody!

Cub $10 Coupon

Cub has a coupon in today's Star Tribune for $10 off your total purchase of $100 more. You can find this on pate A22. This coupon is good from 12/20-12/24 and is also available at the Cub website.
When you use this coupon be sure that it is the first coupon you give the cashier as you check out. Of course, your order must be $100. Use this coupon first and then hand the cashier your other coupons.
You will have trouble using this coupon if you don' t handle your transaction this way. If you use your other coupons first and the total of your transaction comes down below $100 than this coupon is invalid. Always plan your strategy before you get to the checkout!

Gold'n Plump Coupon

Cub Foods Ends Gas Promotion

Here is the article from today's Mpls. Star Tribune confirming what I shared with you yesterday. My source tells me to look for Holiday to be partnering up with another local retailer to offer a similar program. We'll have to watch and see what happens. Until then, the Rainbow Foods gas promotion with BP is the way to go. This promotion has rivaled Cub Food's promotion from day one offering twice the savings and twice the convenience in redemption.

Cub Foods said Friday it's shutting down an alliance with Holiday gas stations begun two years ago amid soaring gas prices. The deal awarded customers a one-cent-per-gallon discount for each $10 spent at Cub.

The last coupons go out on store receipts printed today, and all coupons must be redeemed by their expiration dates, said Cub spokeswoman LeeAnn Jorgenson. She said Cub Foods handed out about $20 million in coupons during the life of the program.

When asked why Cub decided to drop the program, Jorgenson said, "The change allows us to provide greater value to our customers in other ways."

Cub competitor Rainbow Foods has a similar program where customers can earn 10 cents off a gallon of gas at participating BP stations for every $50 spent at Rainbow.

NEWS ALERT: Cub Foods

I have a friend who owns a Holiday Station Store in the Mpls. metro area. She has been told that Cub Foods will discontinue their current gas coupon promotion sometime between 11-8 and 11/16. Sometime during this time-frame Cub will stop printing the gas coupons that you can now get at the register upon check-out. Of course this makes the Rainbow Foods/BP promotion all the sweeter!
