Barnes&Noble

We took the kids to Barnes & Noble today to use their Christmas gift cards and what deals we got! All of the children's Christmas/Holiday books are 50% off right now with an additional 10% off if you are a Member. We grabbed a few for book exchanges for next year.

We planned our trip carefully so that each of the kids could get as much as possible. We took this opportunity to teach them about searching for coupons, checking out the website and putting together a plan before shopping.

We found the following coupons that came in handy:

Various In-Store Printable Barnes & Noble Coupons [Exp. 01/24/10] (Members only) is for:
* $5 off $50
* $5 off One DVD with $20 Purchase
* $5 off One Music CD with $10 Purchase
* Free Tall coffee Latte with Purchase of another
* Buy One B&N Classic, Get One Free* Buy One Quamut Chart, Get One Free

We used the DVD coupon and 2 of the $5/$50 coupon. We allowed the kids to shop and then we gathered at the coffee shop to total up our purchases and plan our strategy for the checkout. Here's how we did.

1. 1 order of 1 DVD using the $5 coupon
2. 1 order totaling ~ $55 using a $5/$50 coupon
3. 1 order totaling ~ $50 using $5/$50 coupon

Total Spent: $151.71
Total Save: $29.41
Gift Cards: $82.50
OOP: $39.80
Total Savings: 19%

The kids got a real kick out of seeing how many items they were able to buy vs. how much they spent. They calculated all of the numbers when we got home and were happy with the extra time that we took to find the coupons and plan our trip. I wish I had been taught to shop smart when I was their age. I really encouage you to take some opportunities to walk your kids through this process so that they can see the value in being a savvy consumer!

You can track Santa tonight by clicking HERE. Right now Santa is on his way to the French Southern Territories. Sounds nice doesn't it? Have fun watching Santa get close to your house!

Merry Christmas!

I'd like to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I will be spending the next week with my family and parents. If I come across a good deal, I'll post it, but otherwise you might not find many new posts for several days.

I started this blog last summer with the idea that maybe a few people would find the deals and suggestions useful. I had no idea that so many of you would check daily to see what was new. I am amazed when people stop me to tell me of the deals they have gotten from reading my blog.

I am definitely new to all of this. I have a lot to learn and look forward to exploring new avenues in the upcoming months. I'd love to hear any suggestions you might have for things you'd like to know more about.

Thank you to all of you for your support and following. I really appreciate it. I look forward to 2010. Merry Christmas!

Rainbow Foods Kelloggs/Keebler Promo

Karen from Minnesota Coupon Adventure is reporting that Rainbow Foods has an unadvertised promotion with Kelloggs/Keebler this week.

Buy 8 items for $20 and receive a coupon for $10 off your next order! There are reportedly signs up in the store.

Click HERE to see Karen's suggested coupons. Remember that you can double 10 coupons this Wed. with a $25 order.

Thanks Karen!

Regarding the use of Target's $5/4 coupon at Rainbow Foods; I tried this last week and it didn't fly. Even though it doesn't say only good at Target, it does have the Target logo on it and Rainbow wouldn't even hear of taking it. The awesome cashier tried for several minutes to push it through and then had to call the manager for assistance. She said no.

Rainbow Foods Gift Card Promo

Rainbow Foods is having a pretty good promotion with the purchase of certain gift cards. If you purchase 2 or more of the following giftcards in $50 quantities, you will get $10 off you next grocery trip.
  • Applebees
  • BP
  • Barnes & Noble
  • Kohls
  • AMC
  • ITunes

Now, I know that Applebees and Barnes & Noble have better deals on their cards if you buy your gift cards from them directly so always check with the store first before buying a gift card from another source.

Okay, let's talk about BP. We all know that Rainbow Foods has the greatest gas discount program ever with BP. If you buy your gas from BP already and you shop at Rainbow Foods already, then consider buying 2 of their $50 BP gift cards, use the $10 grocery coupon on your next order and use the BP cards yourself when you fill up. This way you stretch your dollars a bit further and capitalize a bit on what you are already doing. This will help increase your savings.

Cub $10 Coupon

Cub has a coupon in today's Star Tribune for $10 off your total purchase of $100 more. You can find this on pate A22. This coupon is good from 12/20-12/24 and is also available at the Cub website.
When you use this coupon be sure that it is the first coupon you give the cashier as you check out. Of course, your order must be $100. Use this coupon first and then hand the cashier your other coupons.
You will have trouble using this coupon if you don' t handle your transaction this way. If you use your other coupons first and the total of your transaction comes down below $100 than this coupon is invalid. Always plan your strategy before you get to the checkout!

Black Friday is over. Cyber Monday's come and gone. And quite frankly, even a savvy saver could really use a day off from thinking about comparing prices. That's where our freebies list comes in! Take a moment to scroll through the list below and see if any of these free giveaways strike your fancy. You cooked that bird and shopped 'till you dropped. You earned it, honey!

25 Free Holiday Tunes From Amazon.com.
We're enjoying the heck out of the Sounds of the Season music channel on cable and on our satellite radio, but we wouldn't mind taking a bit of the holiday season's musical delightfulness with us throughout the year. So we were thrilled to hear that Amazon is giving away twenty-five free holiday songs for download, one a day through Christmas. December 1 featured "Joy to the World." Check out today's song, then download before it's gone.

A Free Pampering Pack.
This freebie is right up our alley. It's a 30-minute Relaxation Pack from Veria, including a "luxurious self-pampering guide" (your guess is as good as ours...), a recipe for spa-quality bath salts and two free moisturizer samples. claim your freebie, then wait 6-8 weeks for delivery.

Free Rachael Ray Nutrish Dog Food.
Pets are pricey, but worth every penny. That doesn't mean we mind saving a bit on caring for the furry little mongrels, though. So we're anxiously awaiting the free sample of Nutrish dog food we just ordered. When you register for the sample you'll get to choose a printable coupon for $3.50 off a 6lb bag of Nutrish and an actual freebie. Take the latter and in four to six weeks, you should find some Nutrish at your door. All proceeds go to animal charities when you purchase a bag of this Rachael Ray product, inspired by her pup Isaboo. So we're hoping RedPlum's pooches are fans!

Target Rocks This Week!

I went to Target today and got a boat load of FREE things! Here's what I did:

  • 8 boxes of cereal FREE by pricematching Rainbow's ad. This ad is only good through tomorrow. Buy 8 Kellogg's cereals and get them for $.99 each! Here's the awesome part of the deal! There is a coupon on the Target website for $5 off of 4 Kellogg's cereals. Print 2 of them and you are set for free cereal.
  • 4 disposable Kodak cameras FREE. Target has a coupon on their website for $5 off a Kodak camera. Get the disposable cameras for $3.87 and you will make money on this deal.
  • 4 Swiss Miss Hot Chocolates FREE. Target has a coupon on their website for $1 off a 10pk. of Swiss Miss. Well. . . Swiss Miss is on sale for $.97/box this week. Print two of these and you are set.

REMEMBER: You can print 2 coupons per computer so you could potentially take advantage of these deals multiple times.

TARGET WEBSITE: Click HERE for the website. Scroll down to the bottom and click on Grocery Coupons. Click on ALL COUPONS and begin scrolling through the options. Choose what you want to print and click on "print selected coupons." The first time you do this you will need to install some software that keeps track of how many times you are printing these coupons. You will not receive any SPAM because of installing this. I find that sometimes I will then need to back into the coupons and re-select what I want before they will print for the first time. After the first set prints go back into the coupons and select a second set.

HOW TO: The Target in Eden Prairie pricematches at the Guest Services counter. DO NOT check your pricematch items out at the regular register! Take them to the GS counter. They will adjust the price, apply any coupon and ring you up there. This is the easiest way to do it.

Be sure to bring your ad with you when you pricematch! You can't expect them to match a price if they can't see the offer in writing.

Let me know how you do!

$1.50 Hormel Coupon

I found a coupon tonight for $1.50 off these packages of Hormel meat. These items regularly sell for about $6.99 and will occasionally go down to $4.99 or even BOGO. I have gotten these for as little as $2.99/ea. I suggest you print 2 of these and wait for a good sale to come along. Remember that Cub Foods will take expired coupons so even if a good opportunity doesn't come along for several weeks, you'll still be armed when it does appear! Click HERE to print your coupons.

Cereal Galore!

Wow! Did you look at the Rainbow Foods ad for this week? Cereal has been at it's rock-bottom price for a couple of weeks now, but this week Rainbow Foods is offering it at $.99/box when you purchase 8 boxes of Kellogg's, Keebler and/or Sunshine! This sale runs from Sunday (today) through Wed. the 16th. Wed. of course is double coupon day! If you plan to take advantage of this offer I suggest that you shop early in the morning. Rainbow opens at 6am. The cereal shelves will look pretty sparse if you wait until later in the day to shop.

Now, be sure to arm yourself with coupons before heading out to Rainbow! Right now you can get some great printables by clicking HERE. Remember that you can only double coupons up to $1 on Wed., so the $1.50 coupons are not as valuable in this situation.

Here's another twist! Remember that Target pricematches. Simply bring your Rainbow Foods ad into Target and they will give you the $.99/box price when you follow the details in the ad. If you are really lucky you would have printed a Target coupon from their website a few weeks ago that was for $5 off when you purchase any 4 packages of Kellogg's Cereals. So. . . I plan to go to Target on Tuesday and get 8 boxes of cereal for $.99/box. I plan to use a $5 coupon on 4 boxes, a $1 coupon on 2 boxes and a $1 coupon on one box.

Total for 8 boxes = $7.92
Discount with coupons=$7
Total for 8 boxes after coupons = $.92

Thanks Target!

G-Force Cheapest At Target

Here is what the local stores are selling this for when it becomes available on Tuesday:
  • Target $22.99
  • Walmart $19.96
  • Walgreens $3 off coupon in this week's ad but no price included and nothing on their website

Target is the cheapest place to get this movie when you use the 2 coupons that are available. Click HERE to go to my post where you can print these 2 coupons.

What I Learned At Michaels

I learned something new today while shopping at Michaels. When an item is put on clearance, the register recognizes it as a full-price item. Because of that you can use a coupon on the item! The reason for this is because the price of a clearance item is never going to go back up, so it's recognized as a full-priced item. I was able to purchase a clearance item today and use a 40% off coupon! Sweet!

$15 Off G-Force

G-Force is available in stores on Tuesday. No need to pay full price for this item! Click HERE for a $10 off coupon for the Blu-Ray Combo Pack.
Then go to Target.com, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on Grocery Coupons. You'll see that there are lots of non-grocery coupons available. Click on movies and you'll find a $5 coupon for any Blu-Ray purchase.
There you go! $15 off is awesome! You can use both of these coupons because one of them is a Target Web Coupon and the other is a Manufacturer's Coupon!
Enjoy!

Disney Blu-Ray Upgrade

Are you looking to change your movie viewing format from DVD to Blu-Ray? Here's a great way to do that and upgrade your Disney movies without paying full price for replacements.

Disney has an up-grade program that runs through 12/31. Simply click HERE and choose the movies that you currently own. You will then print out an upgrade form where you will need to attach proof of purchase before mailing the form in for $8 coupons for a new Blu-Ray version of the movie.

You will receive an $8 coupon for EACH movie that you send in proof of purchase for AND that is on the Disney Blu-Ray upgrade list. This will definitely take the bite out of the cost of upgrading!

FREE Kodak Cameras at Target

UPDATE: I went to Target today and used 2 of the Kodak coupons mentioned here. I did get 2 disposable cameras for $3.84 each. The register did give me a credit of $10, so I made $2.32 on this deal. Don't need disposable cameras? I don't either but I thought I could include them on top of a gift or give them to a program assisting the needy during this holiday season.
Here's a nice idea for a stocking stuffer! Target.com is offering a $5 coupon for any Kodak camera. Disposable Kodak cameras are $3.84 at Target. Print 2 coupons and get 2 FREE coupons. Target will either adjust the value of the coupon at the checkout or if you have other items in your order, perhaps you'll get an overage and actually make money on this deal.

To find this coupon go to Target.com and scroll down to the bottom of the page. Click on Grocery Coupons. You'll see that there are over $200 in coupons available for a wide variety of items, not just grocery. Click on all coupons and scroll through until you see the image above. You can print 2 of these coupons.

Rainforest $10 off $25 Purchase Coupon

Rainforest is offering a $10 discount on a $25 purchase as a way of saying Thanks during this difficult economic time. You do need to print this COUPON in order to take advantage of this offer. This offer is good through the month of December. I have a feeling that my kids will insist we use this one!

McDonalds Dollar Breakfast Menu

Did you hear on the news yesterday that McDonalds is going to have a dollar breakfast menu soon? I heard it a couple of times throughout the day. Since then I have read that other fast foods restaurants are going to be adding more value priced items to their menus as well. Here's what I found at the Wall Street Journal regarding McDonalds:

Fast-Food Chain Plans To Offer $1 Breakfast

McDonald's Corp. will start offering breakfast for a buck with the launch of a national dollar menu in January.
The breakfast dollar menu will be backed with advertising across the U.S., and will feature five items: two sausage sandwiches, a sausage burrito, a 12-ounce coffee and a hash brown.
The menu may feature some variations based on markets.
In another addition to McDonald's value offerings, the chain will start selling its Mac Snack Wrap, a wrap version of its popular Big Mac sandwich, later this month for a suggested price of $1.49.

Sounds good to me!

M&Ms Coupon

Who doesn't love M&Ms? Here's a coupon for $1 off 2 bags 9.4 oz. or larger any variety. I have a Target M&M coupon for $1 off a 6 oz. bag that expires on 12/30. I don't know what issue of the paper it came from, but technically you would need to buy 3 bags of chocolates in order to use these 2 coupons. If you're doing a lot of baking, this might be a good deal!

Sports Authority Family & Friends Event

Sports Authority is offering a great 25% discount on one item with a coupon/code from 12/10 - 12/13. Click HERE for the coupon. Now, there is a paragraph of exclusions as you will see which makes it feel like there's literally nothing to apply this coupon to, but a SA employee told me tonight to disregard that and that there are really only 2-3 items that would not be honored including golf balls.
I took my son along with me tonight and he was able to use a coupon so we could double up on our purchase. The register will sometimes limit the number of times a coupon can be applied to a certain credit card number, but this coupon will take the same card number multiple times.
To shop online with this offer use the checkout code: TSADECM.
Happy Shopping!

In-Store Coupons

One of the best places to find great coupons is in your local grocery store. You will find a couple of different kinds of coupons here:
  • Peelies: These are sticker like coupons that are affixed to the front of items. Typically these are found on items that are not refrigerated or frozen, but occasionally I do find them on pizzas or other frozen products. They don't stick as well when cold I find.
  • Blinkies: These are coupons that can be found in dispensers throughout the store. A coupon spits out and within several seconds another coupon spits out. These can be found anywhere in the store including the freezer and refrigeration cases.
  • Hang Tags: These are the coupons that hang from the neck of bottles. You can find them on the 2L bottles of pop, syrup, ketchup, pickles, etc.

You can find each of these types of coupons if you keep your eyes open! The peelies and blinkies are most often found at eye-level. The hang tags tend to be a bit higher, often on the top shelf where the taller bottles are kept.

My strategy with these types of coupons is to take a couple of them when I see them and hang on to them until there is a deal to be had. Now, I know that this infuriates some of you since that means the coupons are not there for the next shopper, but here's my rationale. These coupons are rarely available on products when they are on sale. Typically they are available when the product is at full price. If you remove one of these coupons and check the expiration date it is usually 30-45 days out. These are manufacturer's coupons and obviously the manufacturer doesn't expect you to only take the coupon if you plan to buy the product that day.

I have been able to capitalize on deals like crazy by doing this lately. Just this week I was able to use some $1 Keebler Cookie coupons with the $5 gift card deal at Target to make money on the purchase of these snacks. Tomorrow I will get 2 FREE bags of marshmallows for purchasing some Rice Krispies because of a couple of peelies I picked up weeks ago.

Now, I don't clean out the shelves when I see coupons on products. I take a couple of them and leave the rest for other Smart Shoppers. I definitely believe in sharing a deal and allowing others to benefit as well as myself.

I recommend to my Grocery Tutor students that you stop by the stores you like to shop at occasionally when you do not intend to purchase anything. Stop by for the sole purpose of looking for coupons. You'll be surprised how many you will find. I suggest you do with at the gas stations that you frequent also. Gas stations can have really great coupons!

This is a great strategy that can really make a difference for you when you shop!
